ICD’s 35+ member team helps adults, youth, veterans, entry-level employees, and career changers with disabilities gain economic independence through specialized career planning and evaluation, certified training programs, placement services for job seekers and providing talent acquisition expertise to employers.  Building on the organization’s program success in the five boroughs of New York City, ICD aims to increase its social impact through ongoing collaborations, advocacy, and innovative practices.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: ICD is seeking an Employment Specialist who has a passion for diversity and inclusion in hiring.  You will provide targeted coaching and support to program participants, preparing them for success in obtaining and retaining jobs in their chosen field. The Employment Specialist is also responsible for one of the most critical parts of the employment continuum - sourcing, developing and managing new employer accounts within a specific job market sector for the purpose of developing employment opportunities for program participants.  Experience the feeling of accomplishment that comes from launching a qualified individual with a disability on the road to a fulfilling career and helping employers tap into a pool of talent that can strengthen their business!


 What you will do with employers:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers to generate appropriate employment and internship opportunities for ICD participants.  Develop jobs by means of, but not limited to: phone solicitation and direct visits; networking with businesses, trade associations and other groups, attending career fairs, and actively engaging internship sites for potential employment openings.

  • Act as a liaison for employers seeking solutions for their talent acquisition needs, including promoting ICD’s disability awareness and etiquette training, job accommodation advice, work try-outs, coaching, conducting recruitment events at ICD, and other services to encourage employers to hire qualified program participants.

  • Make appropriate candidate referrals for vacancies that reflect a good match between employer’s needs and program participant’s skills and abilities.

  • Conduct ongoing outreach to employers to assess status of ICD participant placements, determine the need for any retention services and solicit relevant feedback.

  • Regularly evaluate job market and labor trends to determine employer demand, ways to meet this demand, and methods to enhance employer relationships to meet placement goals.

  • Maintain up-to-date employer and job listings to ensure timely responses to position vacancies.

 What you will do with program participants:

  • Develop and implement a strategic employment plan for each participant in accordance with their skills, abilities, and preferences.

  • While in training, engage ICD program participants by making them aware of job opportunities and prepare participants by teaching basic job search skills, including resume development, use of on-line resources, networking, and interviewing techniques both individually and in groups.

  • Facilitate Work Readiness classes as needed.

  • In the job placement phase, conduct ongoing check-ins with job seekers, screen participants for job vacancies, refer appropriate candidates, arrange for and follow up on interview results.

  • Maintain regular contact with program participants after placement and provide follow up supports as needed to retain employment.

What you will do with ICD staff:

  • Work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team including training instructors and vocational counselors to determine the types of jobs best-suited to each program participant’s skills and qualifications.

  • Provide ongoing feedback regarding the current job marketplace for sectors aligned with ICD’s training programs, including hard and soft skills in high demand, required proficiency levels, and hiring trends. 

  • Identify opportunities for and help shape new training programs based on employment trends.

Performance and Administrative responsibilities:

  • Meet monthly job placement targets and expected outcomes in terms of employer development and retention and adhere to required standards for documentation.

  • Perform weekly follow-ups with individuals actively engaged in the job searching phase of the program.

  • Participate in supervision, case conferences, and in-service trainings.

  • Maintain records on a daily and weekly basis to ensure timely submission of monthly reports to government funding agency.

  • Ensure participant rosters are up-to-date with active and inactive participants.

  • Maintain up-to-date contact list for active employers and internship sites as well as job development leads.

  • Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Travel within the metropolitan area is required on a regular basis (minimum 25%) for face-to- face meetings with potential and current employers to establish partnerships to hire our program participants; an existing book of business is a plus

  • Applicant must have an outgoing personality, use creativity and enthusiasm to motivate and tailor learning activities to meet group and individual needs, and the ability to address large groups. 

  • Experience facilitating work readiness workshops to individuals with barriers to employment is a plus.

  • Familiarity with ACCES-VR and their operating structure is preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, resume writing, and using job search engines.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Collaboration with other ICD team members in an effort to assist participants with obtaining and maintaining employment

  • Ability to use independent judgment and initiative

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills

  • Bi-lingual a plus

  • Excellent social media skills are a plus!

  • Ability to lift 20 lbs. 


  • BA/BS required in a related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years in workforce development with a focus on training and employment for individuals with disabilities strongly preferred. 

  • Background in recruitment, sales and/or business development with demonstrated ability to meet targets on a regular basis would also be considered.
