Welcome to ICD’s Facilities Management, Building Repair Technician Class

ICD’s Facilities Management vertical offers a variety of innovative training programs where people with disabilities can earn industry-recognized skills and certification. The Building Repair Technician program is a three-month, hands-on training that prepares individuals with disabilities to be maintenance handypeople or supers in the rapidly growing facilities management field. The program includes accessible classroom instruction, hands-on activities, work readiness training, a pathway to OSHA and EPA certifications, and connection to employment opportunities. Key Components of the Program

An Accessible Curriculum that has been adapted for different learning styles in a physically accessible environment that includes adjustable desks and computers, ergonomic peripherals, noise-canceling headphones, eye-tracking devices, screen readers, and real-time voice transcription. It is tuition-free for qualifying students.

Work Readiness workshops and one-on-one coaching (80 hours) to address topics such as resume development, cover letter writing, networking, mock interviews, and workplace etiquette.

Real-World Experience in our fully equipped body shop and through internship placements.

Certifications, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 40-Hour Construction Safety Course and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 8-Hour Initial Lead Renovator Course Administrator certifications, both of which are professionally recognized in the facilities management field.

Connections to Employers through one-on-one work with Employment Specialists who create individualized career plans and help graduates secure career-track jobs.

Eligibility

You may qualify if you:

  • Are a New York State resident

  • Have a documented disability

  • Are unemployed or underemployed

  • Are able to commit to the six-month training without missing a class

  • Are legally authorized to work in the U.S.A.

About the Building Repair Technician Training

Maintenance and repair are instrumental to the successful functioning of any building, from apartments to office spaces, making facilities management a continuously growing field. The need for professionals who can perform highly technical duties like carpentry, painting, and plastering, as well as complete day-to-day maintenance work and repairs is high.

In the program, participants build foundational knowledge through hands-on learning in the following areas:

  • Basic Electrical and Retrofitting/Energy Efficiency

  • Basic Plumbing and Water Conservation

  • Basic Carpentry

  • Wall and Ceiling Repair, and Weatherization

  • Painting, Tile Installation, and Air Sealing

  • Floor Care and Janitorial/Green Products

  • Lock and Installation (Doors/Windows)

Graduates will be ready for jobs in the Facilities Maintenance field, including: Building Maintenance Worker, Handyperson, and Super. Hourly rates for a handyperson or super range from $20 to $40 per hour; and, as a full-time employee with benefits, ranges from $50,000 to $70,000 a year.

Salary ranges can vary widely depending on additional skills and the number of years you have spent in your profession.
