Welcome to ICD’s Facilities Management, Custodial Class

ICD’s Facilities Management vertical offers a variety of innovative training programs where people with disabilities can earn industry-recognized skills and certification. The Custodial program is an eight-week, hands-on training that prepares individuals with disabilities to be building cleaners, porters, or custodians/janitors in the rapidly growing facilities management field. The program includes accessible classroom instruction, hands-on activities, work readiness training, a pathway to OSHA certifications, and connection to employment opportunities. Key Components of the Program

An Accessible Curriculum that has been adapted for different learning styles in a physically accessible environment that includes adjustable desks and computers, ergonomic peripherals, noise-canceling headphones, eye-tracking devices, screen readers, and real-time voice transcription. It is tuition-free for qualifying students.

Work Readiness workshops and one-on-one coaching (80 hours) to address topics such as resume development, cover letter writing, networking, mock interviews, and workplace etiquette.

Real-World Experience in our fully equipped body shop and through optional internship placements.

Certification, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour General Industry certification, which is professionally recognized in the facilities management field.

Connections to Employers through one-on-one work with Employment Specialists who create individualized career plans and help graduates secure career-track jobs.

Eligibility

You may qualify if you:

  • Are a New York State resident

  • Have a documented disability

  • Are unemployed or underemployed

  • Have basic reading and writing skills

  • Complete a manual dexterity assessment

  • Are able to commit to the eight-week training without missing a class

  • Are legally authorized to work in the U.S.A.

About the Custodial Training

Custodial and cleaning services are instrumental to the safety and upkeep of all buildings, making facilities management a continuously growing field. The need for professionals who can perform essential duties to keep premises of office, residential, commercial, or institutional buildings in clean, sanitary, and orderly condition is high.

In the program, participants build foundational knowledge through hands-on learning in the following areas:

  • Stone/Marble Polishing and Exterior Cleaning

  • Walk-Off Mats, Window Cleaning, and Recycling

  • Floor Care and Machines, and Green Products

  • Office and Restroom Cleaning

  • Carpet Cleaning

Graduates will be ready for Custodial and Commercial Cleaning jobs, including: Building Maintenance Worker, Porter, Janitor, and Custodian. Whether part-time or full-time with benefits, hourly rates for a building cleaner range from $18 to $26 per hour; and, as a full-time employee with benefits, ranges from $35,000 to $60,000 a year.

Salary ranges can vary widely depending on additional skills and the number of years you have spent in your profession.
